Two of the original settlers of Portland, Asa Lovejoy and Francis W. Pettygrove, could not agree on a name for their over 600 acre site known originally as "The Clearing". Lovejoy wanted to name the area Boston, as he was from Boston. So the partners decided to flip a coin known as the "Portland Penny", and Pettygrove won. Thus, the name Portland- which obviously stuck.
